| Notes | He inserted a diaphragm or "stop" between the adjacent flat surfaces of two plano-convex lenses (a "doublet"). This reduced spherical aberration but at the cost of reducing the effective aperture of an already small lens. In high-power single lenses, spherical aberration is much more of a problem than chromatic aberration. |
