|Notes||Theobald Smith. See F. F. Katz, Veterinary Heritage 17: 63-71, 1994. Smith named the protozoon Amoeba meleagridis, and the name was later changed to Histomonas meleagridis. Transmission was later (1920) shown to be through ingestion of worm eggs containing the protozoon. The worm is a nematode (Heterakis papillosa, later H. gallinarum) and is a common parasite of turkeys|
