NotesWalther Hesse, acting on the suggestion of his wife and assistant Fannie Hesse, found that agar was superior to gelatin as the basis of solid media in bacteriolgical culture. Not clear whether initial observation was in late 1881 or early 1882, but happened while W. Hesse was a student in Koch's lab. Not published by either Hesse; see entry for Koch, 1882.
