Notes | It is impossible to say what he meant by "vermes" (worms). The word worm, like the word insect, could refer to any small creature held in low esteem. In any case, Borel was reporting hearsay and speculation. Dowel dismisses the suggestion by Singer (1915) that Borel probably saw protozoa or bacteria. |
