NotesWhen peritoneal exudate was added, the germs rounded up and clumped as in Pheiffer Phenomenon, see 1894. The normal exudate contained cells, and Metchnikoff's pupil Bordet, in determining that the cells were not necessary, was led to his discovery of "complement." See 1895 Bordet. Bordet mentioned Metchnikoff's contribution briefly in his 1895 paper.
