NotesSlare speculated that animalcules may have been associated with cattle plague. He proposed that Leeuwenhoek would have found "some strange Insect or other" in the affected cattle. Because Leeuwenhoek had reported bacteria and protozoa in diarrheal human feces, and because "Insect" would then have referred to any low form of life, Slare apparently appreciated, more than Leeuwenhoek, the likely role of microscopic organisms in disease causation.
