NotesSuspected faulty filter or disease caused by soluble toxin (a reasonable conclusion because the diphtheria toxin had already been reported, see 1888). From a translation of part of his report (Lechevalier) it would seem that he did not suspect a class of smaller pathogens. Nevertheless, his illustrations depict "inclusion bodies" (aggregates of virions) and crystals of the virus.
