| Notes | He reported that cattle could be immunized against anthrax by [injection] of heated and filtered anthrax blood. This apparently preceded Pasteur's work on the subject, which began in the summer of 1880, and which may have been prompted by Toussaint's work. See 1881. Note from Geison: Toussaint's work was originally recorded in a sealed note of July 12. Disclosed a few weeks later, the note recorded that the blood had been defribinated and filtered through paper to remove germs; then heated at 55 C to kill any remaining germs. Initially Tooussaint regarded it as a "dead" vaccine, not appreciating spore formation in anthrax. See entry "b" for sequel. |
