Contribution | b. Reported, as an incidental remark, the value of agar in bacteriological media. |
Reference | Brock |
Notes | He had adopted its use on the recommendation of his former student W. Hesse (q.v.) who had found it greatly superior to the gelatin then being used for making solid media. Hesse, in turn, had tried agar at the suggestion of his wife, Fannie Hesse, -- whose appreciation of its potential value stemmed from her experience in both her kitchen and her husband's laboratory. There was no separate publication on this extremely important discovery. |
