Notes | See 1824 for more on Amici. In the early years of the !9th century, many attempts were made to make achromatic objectives. These were inspired by the mid-18th century discovery that, despite Newton's views, it was possible to make telescope lenses with considerable correction of chromatic and spherical aberration. Application to microscopes had limited success initially; but in the 19th century achromatic microscopes became important in the discovery of "germs." |
