ContributionCoined Schizomycetes (fission fungi) for bacteria and other micro-organisms.
ReferenceAnon.
NotesBut did not decide whether they were plants, animals or organic particles (cf. Cohn, who was sure that bacteria were not animals, and who's view prevailed). Believed that microscopic fungi could arise spontaneously and, being without parents, could vary in form. This fed the controversy over pleomorphism that dogged the early development of microbiology; the observed pleomorphism of certain fungi led workers to expect the same from bacteria.
