| Notes | This was the first project of the Bureau of Animal Industry, created in that year by Congress as a branch of the US Dept. of Agriculture. The causative agent was not known, and the means used was the "stamping out" method that evolved from the control of rinderpest in Europe in the period 1774-1843 (quarantine of all animals, slaughter of affected animals and contact animals, disinfection of premises). This would imply recognition of contagion. Under Director D.E. Salmon, the BAI eradicated pleuropneumonia from US cattle by 1892. The causative agent is Mycoplasma sp., belonging to a group of very small bacteria that lack a cell-wall. |
