NotesCharlton Bastian, a strong defender of Spontaneoius Generation, conceded that germs were associated with disease, and might even be the result of disease, but were not the cause. He argued his position in a major newspaper, and the significance of the event in the present context is that it occurred during a renewal of the Spontaneoius Generation controversy, and after the important reports of Pasteur, Lister and Koch.
